Jess was disquieted when Cindy claimed that the twigs and leaves found in the middle of the road were put there by fairies. Over the last couple of months she had begun having a growing concern about Cindy’s state of mind.
First there was the “evil” tractor, then a talking scarecrow, and now only last week Cindy had told her she had found a gateway to fairyland. Cindy’s own crazy grandmother had claimed she talked regularly to fairies, and now Cindy was doing the same. Jess was beginning to wonder if it was some inherited mental illness that was starting to manifest itself.
Jess lived in the real world. There was no such thing as fairies, or walking and talking scarecrows. It was maybe okay for children to believe these things, but certainly not a college-educated adult. Jess began to keep a closer eye on Cindy in fear and apprehension.
