Uses of a Time Machine 1 (flash fiction)

Uses of a Time Machine 1

“So you’ve built a time machine?”

“Yes. What do you think?”

“Impressed. What are you planning to use it for?”

“When I see pictures of people from the past and if they look too smug I then go back in time to smack them in the face.”

“I’m sorry? What?!”

“I go back in time to smack people in the face I don’t like the look of. Anyone who looks too smug or self-satisfied, in my opinion.”

“Yes we’ve established that. You’ve built this time machine, and this is what you choose to do with it? What about all the other things you could use it for?”

“Well that was the thing I was thinking of when I was building it. I’ve never considered anything else.”

“You’re joking aren’t you?”

“No. Okay smartarse, what would you use it for then?”

“Go back in time and see the dinosaurs or how life on this planet began, observe important moments in history, see what happens in the future, I mean the possibilities are endless.”

“All those ideas sound dumb.”

“So let me get this straight: you built a time machine, something no one else has done before, and was hitherto considered impossible, and you use it to go back in time to hit people.”

“Only if they deserve it.”

“Deserve it? Who deserves being randomly smacked in the face by you?”

“You’d be surprised.”

“I guess I would be. Violence is not a solution to anything.”

“But it is amusing.”

“The beauty of it is after I smack them in the face I then get back into my time machine and come back here. They’re left standing in the street totally confused and there’s nothing they can do about it muahahaha!”

“You built a time machine solely so you could do that? Are you insane?”

“Very probably.”

  1. You forgot the most important two uses; so bad writers can either RetCon very poorly thought out and written past works, and to create even worse grandiose stories of saving the future by changing the past…

  2. I can’t help wondering what the smacked soul might make of this. Will it cause them to ponder, perhaps turn them from their current path, for better, for worse? An interesting notion encapsulated here. 🙂
