The Witch (Day 5, flash fiction)

The Witch

I went to the Witch’s house. It was outside the village and in the middle of the forest. When I finally came to the rather forlorn and shabby looking house, I knocked on the front door two times and waited.

“Enter!” a voice said. I opened the door, which opened with a loud creak, and came into the house. There were jars full of who-knows-what lining the shelves on every wall. In the centre of the room was a fire pit with a large black cauldron on it. The Witch stood there slowly stirring the cauldron with a large stick. She was old and wrinkly  and wore a musty black dress. She looked up at me and smiled. “Come on in my child, and tell me what bothers you.” I walked further in.

“There is a girl in the village called Rosemary who I really love. Can you make her love me?” I asked. The witch cackled.

“Bold you are young one.” she replied and then sighed. “With my cauldron I can create spells that can make potions or charms, or even change the world in a small way. I can make you a love charm, but it will eventually fade. True love is the most powerful magic in the world and beyond my power to create.”

“So what do I do?” I asked her.

“Why not go to her and tell her you feel? If she loves you then all will be good, if she doesn’t at least you will know and then you can move on.” she replied.

“Do you know where I can find someone who can make her truly love me?” She nodded her head in disappointment.

“Did you not heed my advice? If you have to make someone love you, how can that be true love? I know not of anyone powerful enough to do this.” she told me.

“You’re useless then!” I shot back at her. She looked at me and gave me a dark smile. She started stirring the cauldron with greater force.

Smoke rise up and strong wind do blow

make this ungrateful miscreant away and GO!” she chanted.

All of a sudden a strong wind came out of nowhere and I was blown out of the Witch’s house with great force. The door shut loudly behind me. I picked myself up and ran back to the village as fast as I could.
