Out of His Depth (flash fiction)

Out of His Depth

The two of them lay on the bank as the man appraised the sign warning of deep water and grunted.

“I wonder how deep that pond really is.” he commented. The woman gazed at him interestedly.

“They say that pond has no end. The water just goes down and down straight into the bowels of Hell.” she told him. The man rolled his eyes.

“Of course it does, and if you believe that, then you’ll also believe all the other bullshit they spout in this village.”

“Maybe they’re right.” the woman offered. The man stood up.

“There’s one way to prove this is codswallop, and that’s by diving in there.” the man told her.

“Please… don’t.” the woman replied without much conviction. Taking no heed of her tone, he plunged into the water. The woman waited. Minutes ticked by. The man never resurfaced.

“Yet another one.” said the woman smiling.

  1. Definitely had me chuckling! And she didn’t sound overly concerned, did she? Course…if the pond is endless, just how long is the stick holding up the sign, anyway? πŸ˜‰
